Front: Canada #27 6¢ Dark Brown on cover with black target cancel
and matching black Waterford, C.W. split circle cancel.
Reverse: Black striped Mourning cover, slight tear and embossed medallion.
Notes: This is a #27 used on cross border mourning cover
from Waterford, Canada West to the small town of Wattsburgh in Erie
County, Pennsylvania (now Wattsburg, Pop. 378). Proper 6¢ usage for mail to the US
in this period. Charles Edward Duncombe was a descendent of the
prominent English Duncombe family. His grandfather, Charles Duncombe,
was the founder of the American branch of the family and a Revolutionary
patriot. From his large fortune he contributed over sixty thousand
dollars in aid of the colonists. His son, father of Charles Edward
Duncombe, was a volunteer soldier in the War of 1812. Charles Edward's
son, John Duncombe, passed the Pennsylvania Bar and relocated to Fort
Dodge in Iowa.
Condition: Stamp is fine for the issue with slight tear
lower right edge.
