SG#71, SCOTT#28b DELIGHTFULLY COMPLICATED MARKINGS

STAMPED COVERS OF GREAT BRITAIN

1857 Trans-Atlantic Packet Cover with 1 Shilling Pale Green stamp on Manchester, England
to New York cover, with Scarce black "6"

Scott #28b - Stanley Gibbons #71

Great Britain 1 Shilling Pale Green 1856 Issue on 1857 Trans-Atlantic Packet cover from Manchester, England to New York. Cancelled: Scarce black large “6” in circle “MANCHESTER/MR24/1857” cds with “498” obliterator. Backstamped in black “UPPERMILL/MR24/1857/A”, “LIVERPOOL/MR25/1857/B7” AND “L/MR25/A” packet oval. Carried by the “City of Manchester” which was a later known as an immigrant ship. Very unusual cover which is also cancelled with Red Warehouse Receipt “City of Manchester” (“City of Baltimore” crossed out) for £732 worth of Doeskins. Stamp F-VF.

The general Trans-Atlantic Packet rate from England to the United States at this time was 1 shilling for a standard weight letter (up to ½ ounce). This equaled 24¢ in US currency or 12 pence in British sterling. For Packet carriage this sum was allocated as: 3¢ (1½d) due England for its inland carriage to the Packet, 16¢ (8d) due to the packet itself for the ocean carriage and 5¢ (2½) due the US for its inland carriage. Generally a 5¢ accountancy mark indicates carriage by a British Pacquet while a 21¢ mark indicates carriage by an American Packet.

Scott values this stamp on cover at $350. Stanley Gibbons values this stamp on cover at £350 or $640
