Front
: Extremely Fine US #216 5¢ Blue Garfield tied by Denver, Colorado black CDS dated October 1, 1889. Garfield Stamp offset on hand drawn caricature of a wheelbarrow being pushed by a Negro in field hat.
Reverse: Transit mark through New York and Receiving Mark by Reading, England.
Notes: An amazing and unique work of Black History Art incorporating Garfield's image as the cargo being pushed by a black field worker. While we cannot be sure, it is possible that this is an early caricature either by noted illustrator Reynolds Beal sending a note back to relatives in England or his younger brother, artist Gifford Beal, to his brother in England. The initials can be viewed to see what you think.. Reynolds Beal had been traveling in Europe prior to returning to the US to study under William Merit Chase in 1890. Scarce cover from Denver, Colorado to Reading, England.

Reynolds Beal (1867-1951) American Impressionist

An important American impressionist, Reynolds Beal was encouraged early on by his younger brother, noted artist Gifford Beal, to study art abroad. Once Reynolds completed his education from Cornell University in naval architecture, and being from a rather wealthy family, he struck out for Europe, where he informally viewed as much art as he could, primarily in Madrid. Once stoked, his lifelong fire for painting never waned. Beal’s formal art education began in 1890 under William Merit Chase in his famous Long Island school. Although similar, Beal’s technique is more subdued in application and more vivid in coloration than that chase is known for. Inevitably, Beal’s nautical education led him to paint primarily ships and waterways. His individual style broadened from early technical portraiture to the surreal impressionist tableaus of broad, sweeping coastal vistas, most often possessing ships as distant subjects.

Condition: Very Fine with the some slight soiling and cancels are a bit heavy and smudged, but the artwork is unique and the cover design is like none we have seen before. More research is required.
Contents: Envelope only, no Contents.
