1798 NEW YORK OLIVE-BROWN CLAMSHELL CANCELLED COVER TO DAVID DAGGETT,
CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT OF CONNECTICUT, US SENATOR
AND THE FOUNDER OF YALE LAW SCHOOL

This covers shows the scarce New York City "Clam Shell" cancel. There were two iterations of this cancel, one having New York in large type and a small date and a later one with New York in smaller type and the date larger. This is of the 1st type. It was only in use from 1798-1799 in the olive brown color. The American Stampless Cover Catalogue 1996 edition (the latest one issued!) valued this cancel at $125 over a decade ago.

Notes: Addressed to David Daggett Esq. attending the General Assembly in Hartford. The mail notation might have been a note to catch the post. David Daggett a prominent Attorney was a founder of the Yale Law School. Daggett was born in Attleborough, Massachusetts, 31 December 1764; died in New Haven, Connecticut, 12 April 1851. He was graduated at Yale in 1783, studied and practiced law in New Haven, became state's attorney in 1811, mayor of the City in 1828, and held other local offices. From 1791 till 1813 he was a member of the Connecticut legislature, serving in 1794 as speaker, and from 1797 till 1804 and 1809 till 1813 as a member of the council or upper house. He was elected a US Senator in the place of Chauncey Goodrich, who resigned, and served from 24 May 1813, till 3 March 1819, when he returned to his extensive practice at the bar in Connecticut. From 1826 till 1832 he was a judge of the Connecticut Supreme Court. Daggett's judicial career culminated in his 1832 appointment as Chief Justice of Connecticut's Supreme Court. He served on the Yale Corporation three times (1803-04; 1809-13; and 1832-34) and served two terms as Mayor of New Haven (1828-1830). During this time he served as Yale's only full professor of Law - the first "Kent Professor of Law" at Yale College. Daggett along with Seth Staples and Samuel Hitchcock founded a law school in New Haven. Daggett lent his name and prestige to the school, and taught occasional classes there, as well as overseeing the school's gradual merger with Yale College.
