Red Baltimore CDS

Red "SHIP" Mark

Red "42" Rate

Front: Red Baltimore Circle cds receiving canx + Red "SHIP" canx + Ms Red "42" also a ms "rec'd 4 March" receiving notation. This is 42¢ for a double weight letter [content refers to enclosures] traveling 300-500 miles Baltimore to Providence (2x20¢) + the 2¢ ship fee for ocean carriage.
Reverse: Penciled lotting numbers
Notes: A nice example of a Trans-Atlantic Ship cover from Amsterdam through Baltimore and then inland to Providence, Rhode Island. The Red "42" and "SHIP" might mean it was prepaid. A Standard practice in Europe was the use of black markings for postage due and red for pre-paid or part paid postage, but this was not followed as closely in American post offices at this time. A Beautiful example of the "42" Double weight Trans-Atlantic Ship letter rate.
Condition: Very Fine with usual file folds.
Contents: Extensive Legible English: Dateline Amsterdam, 13 November 1800. Mr. Daniel Crommetin writes to Messrs. Corlis, Brown & Ives of Providence, Rhode Island advising them of the condition of their accounts as well as prices current.  He notes that the anticipation of Peace in the Continental War may have an effect in the near future. In a second letter within by a different hand, the writer has talked with a Captain Olney of the Ship Mary Ann and advised him that the prospects for Peace have taken a bad turn. Nice Napoleonic Commerce content.
