Boston CDS (BPM#201)

"Sh[ip] 10" Rate

Front
: Early Boston Circle Postmark (BPM #201) + ms "S[hi]p.10". Rate paid the 8¢ fee for a distance of not over 40 miles + the 2¢ ship fee for ocean carriage as based on the new postal rates promulgated March 2, 1799 for a total of 10¢. It is interesting to note that from the north of Boston Harbor it is 39 miles along the Boston Post Road (now essentially Route 1) to Newbury Port. Yet we have also seen Boston to Newbury Port Ship Letters (in this same time period) with charges of 10¢ for a distance of 40 to 90 miles. We assume that perhaps those vessels docked in the South Harbour which would put the distance at just over 40 miles.
Reverse: Nothing to note, Docketing note states: "Wm Wade at Mantanzas/Oct 14,1801
Notes: From the Moses Brown correspondence. A very nice example of a Ship Letter from the outport of Matanzas, Cuba through Boston Harbor and thence by inland carriage to Newbury Port, north of Boston on the Mass/N.H. line, at the mouth of the Merrimack River.
Condition: Very Fine with usual file folds and some spotting.
Contents: Lovely isolated outport letter in Legible English: Dateline Mantanzas 14 Oct 1801: "Mr. Moses Brown, Sir, the present is to inform you that the Port is now declared open for Neutral Vessels. At present there is no produce for a return cargo, not 30 Hhds [Hogsheads] Molasses and Sugar at 13½ & 17½ on account of a considerable advance on that article in Havana. But in December Molasses will be plentiful & Sugar in the succeeding months. Provisions are scarce and high as we have for some months [due to the closed port] depended on supplies by Coasters from Havana therefore the prices may be considered as nominal. Not a Barrel of Beef or Pork nor a Pound of Lard. Should you be disposed to adventure to this  place you may rest assured of my best services. YMOS William Wade"
