: Attractive black fancy oval Newport Cancel. This was submitted to the American Stampless Cover Catalog and accepted as the earliest known use of this cancel. Manuscript 6¢ marking for postage of a letter traveling not over 30 miles.
Reverse: Small engraved owner's mark
Notes: The earliest known use of the Ornate Newport Oval Handstamp.
Condition: Very Fine with usual vertical file folds.
Contents: Sheet Folded Letter (SFL) Dateline: Newport August 20, 1823 from Stephen DeBlois in Newport to Peck & Company. Contents discuss the necessity of perhaps having a dockside auction using cargo samples as flour is not selling well and the need to avoid paying for unloading if the cargo needs to be reshipped to another port.
