Front:    Blue Troy, NY CDS, Blue "PAID", small indistinguishable blue rate mark next to ms rate mark (likely "6" as it matches a "6" written inside the cover) and marked "Paid" as well in ms.

Notes: Very Fine Stampless cover transmitting a Court Judgment.
Condition:   A simple Court Judgment for Debt and Costs folded and addressed on back side
Contents: State of New York, Supreme Court, judgment of Debt of $200 plus court costs of $8.62 filed December 6, 1842 in the case of John Van Nostrand, James Van Nostrand & John James Van Nostrand & Herman Westervelt vs. Lorenzo D. Haight.  Willard Raymond Attorney, docketed December 5, 1842 in the Court Clerk's Office in Albany.  "The above is a correct transcript of the facts necessary to make a perfect docket of the judgment in the said cause." Signed by John Keyes Paige, Clerk.  Paige went on to become the Mayor of Albany from 1845-1846.  The Westervelts and the Van Nostrands were well known Dutch Descended Families of the Albany Region.

The City of Ballston Spa was incorporated in 1807 and in 1816 became the County Seat of Saratoga County and hence the repository of County Court records. As an interesting sidebar, Abner Doubleday was born and raised in Ballston Spa and three years earlier had invented the US National Pastime of baseball, while years later he fired the first shot of the Civil War. This according to the Abner Doubleday Society!
